Il Giardino Barberini • The pope’s 55-hectare garden at their former summer residence (Pope Frances changed it 2016 to be a museum) • Pope Urban (born Maffeo Barberini - hence the name and the trhree Bernini-bees everywhere) had the cadtle and gardens designed after he became pope in 1623 • Its immense parterres and shady holm oak parks were built into Roman Emperor Domitian’s country residence (100AC). The Castel Gandolfo property has been in papal hands since 1596 when ot was sold by its former bancrupt owner • The formal Giardino del Belvedere demonstrates the scale of what popes have been keeping to themselves all these decades really is striking. Stretching away below is a series of rigidly geometrical parterres, edged by towering cypresses, cloud-shaped crowns of marine pines (for me typical for Rome) and there is even a farm with cows and chickens having a home which is a copy of an ancient Roman city (the farm us not open to the public) • It costs a whooping 27 € for a 50 minute tour in a kind of open bus (incl the museum and also newly opened papal rooms) - and no leaving the bus • I would have loved to walk around here a couple of hours on my own... • The gardener’s coat stand 🤣 #barberini #giardinibarberini #papal #castelgandolfo #summerresidence #opulent #formal #italiangarden #baroque #italy #montealbano #lagoalbano #italy #italia #italymay18uh #solotravel #roadtrip

English landscape architect Cecil Pinsent designed this formal garden at the bottom of the gardens at La Foce for his patrons Antonio and Iris Origo (see my other post on how this couple impacted the landscape of the #cretesenesi ). Note how he created symmetry between the height of the retaining wall on the right and the cypress trees on the left! This formal garden, based on #renaissance ideals, has multiple axes or points of view, each one of them more stunning than the next. . . . . #landscapearchitecture #gardendesign #renaissancearchitecture #englishgarden #italiangarden #irisorigo #lafoce #cecilpinsent #valdorcia #pienza #arthistory #artsblog #artblogger #italianrenaissance #20thcentury #gabinettovieusseux
